Climate change has become an important and prominent topic in our lives. The data acquired by the world’s leading research scientists indicate our world is gradually getting warmer, and the culprit is the billions of tons of carbon dioxide gas that we release into the air. We all know by reducing our energy use we can limit the amount of carbon dioxide that is generated, but there are also other ways to address the climate change issue. One of the most overlooked and important ways to offset our emissions is to conserve our natural resources. Among the important reasons to conserve these resources is their capacity to absorb and offset the carbon dioxide we generate. In line with the Conservancy’s vision to support and encourage rational land use, our land stewardship activities preserve thousands of acres of open space in Berks County. Every acre we conserve not only ensures this land will not be developed with emissions-producing houses and businesses, but also helps negate the emissions we are already producing. One acre of densely forested land can absorb as much as 1 ton of carbon in a year. When you consider the 6000+ acres that the Conservancy has protected, the significance of our work to abate climate change comes to light.
Urban Greening and Trail Creation is also a focus of the Conservancy. In Southeast Pennsylvania urban issues are especially important to address. Urban sprawl has greatly increased the time we spend in our cars traveling each day and reduced the effectiveness of our public transit systems. The Conservancy will continue to drive urban revitalization and promote trails and greening so we can reduce the rate of urban sprawl and its negative consequences to the environment. Supporting the Berks County Conservancy will help you minimize your impact on the environment and the climate. What can you do Locally?
